Snail Shell System

Snail Shell System by N55, 2001

“The SNAIL SHELL SYSTEM is a low cost system that enables persons to move around, change their whereabouts and live in various environments. One unit supplies space for one person. It is mobile both on land and water. One person can move it slowly, either by pushing it like a wheel, walking inside it or on top of it.
On water it can be rowed, moved by a kite or hooked up to a vessel, for example, a ferry. The unit rests on one flat side and can be anchored in lakes, rivers, harbours or at sea. On land, it can be placed in city spaces, fields, forests etc.
The SNAIL SHELL SYSTEM takes up very little space and can easily be placed in a discreet way. It can be buried in the ground, exposing only the entrance. It can also function as a comfortable space inside existing buildings.
Several units can meet up and form temporary communities.
The unit can be hooked up onto existing infrastructure like telecommunication lines and electricity cables (for example, by connecting it to street lamps).
If special devices are added, the unit can supply its own energy.
The SNAIL SHELL SYSTEM can also be used for transporting different items and it can provide protection for persons when they participate in situations like demonstrations…” more info via N55

“being friends and admirers of each other’s work for a long time, electronic music composer / visual artist alva noto (carsten nicolai) and composer / voice-artist blixa bargeld (also known as singer of einstürzende neubauten and guitarist of nick cave and the bad seeds) decided to join forces to initiate a collaborative project in 2007.

together they developed a musical concept based on the combination of improvisation and abstraction. the impulsive live performance of blixa bargeld and the elaborated beat structures and sound landscapes of alva noto merge to a surprising and unexpected result. working on their own experimental material that gains its strength from the spontaneity of the live-performance of bargeld’s voice as well as rethinking traditional songs in their own special manner, they deliver an outstanding and inspiring musical blend for their audience” …via raster-noton

Diskjokke – En Fin Tid

Diskjokke – En Fin Tid

Oslo-based label Smalltown Supersound is set to release En Fin Tid, the second album by Joachim Dyrdahl, AKA diskJokke.

“Along with artists like Prins Thomas, Todd Terje and Lindstrom, diskJokke is a central figure in Norway’s disco scene. He first made a splash in 2007 with Staying In, a debut album that earned praise from Spin, Filter and Pitchfork Media, and continued to gain popularity with remixes for Bloc Party, Charlotte Gainsbourg and more recently The xx. The new record, whose title translates to “a happy time,” grew out of a very significant turning point in Dyrdahl’s life: he became a father and decided to do music full time, setting aside his career in mathematics to focus completely on family life and the studio.

Like much of his work so far,
En Fin Tid boasts the sunny, prog disco vibe for which Dyrdahl and his cohorts are known. The album draws inspiration from Brian Eno, Arthur Russell and the Alan Parsons Project, as well as krautrock artists like Tangerine Dream and Holger Czukay of Can. ” via RA

Ital Tek – Midnight Colour

Brighton based producer Alan Myson’s Ital Tek project returns to Planet Mu for a second long player.

Meeting dubstep and garage’s matrix of sub bass and lurching 2-step rhythms half-way with electronica at its most melodic, ‘Midnight Colour’ is its name and it’s epic. The mood has lightened since his debut ‘Cyclical’ plus the tempo has dropped to a more languorous 130 bpm creating more space to enfold the melody and texture.

Songs like ‘Moonbow’ or ‘Subgiant’ embody an optimistic nocturnal reverie that could count the Black Dog’s ‘Bytes’ album as it’s ancestor. In contrast, ‘Satellite’ has a darker feel with it’s New Romantic style synth melodies set to a skeletal rhythm, and ‘Black and White’s surging, wordless vocals are carried by gentle synths and bass arrangements. ‘Strangelove’ has a more stepping feel, set to a tough 4/4 beat and ‘Infinite’ marries throbbing bass with marimba and echoing Timpani crashes. The album fittingly culminates with ‘Restless Tundra’, a song that features the vocals of Anneka, which feature in sampled slithers throughout many of the tracks, the piece summing up the reflective mood of the album. via planet mu

f.s.blumm & nils frahm – music for lovers music versus time

f.s.blumm & nils frahm – music for lovers music versus time

“Music for lovers, music versus time. Isn’t love the opposite of time? Time can seem to go on forever when you are in love, but the moment you begin to grasp at the passing days, hours, minutes, then love is already beginning to decay. ‘You can’t hurry love’, as they say.

On this album, F.S.Blumm and Nils Frahm took the time to appreciate all the tiny details in a sound that many would never take the time to notice at all. Taking recordings culled from previous sessions of friends playing cellos, trumpets, vibraphones and more, the two Berliners began to improvise around these recordings and craft them into something far more abstract and expressive. Unleashed from the constraints of a ‘pop song’, these recordings began to take on a life of their own and whereas once they existed simply to serve the song, here they develop their own language where hair brushing against string or air vibrating across reed speaks volumes. To call this album a remix-album-in-disguise wouldn’t do it justice, but somewhere in there, remnants of some of Blumm’s ‘pop’ work with Old Splendifolia and Bobby & Blumm can be discovered…” via sonic pieces

“Contemporary Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan (b. 1960) is known for his witty embrace of semantic shifts that result from imaginative plays with materials, objects, and actions. In his work, contradictions in the space between what the artist describes as softness and perversity wage a sarcastic critique on political power structures, from notions of nationalism or the authorities of organized religion to the conceit of the museum and art history. Like the traditions established by Dada and Surrealism, his uncanny juxtapositions uproot stable understandings of the world around us…”  via  The Menil Collection
